Acne is caused when pores on the body get clogged. Most commonly, acne is found on the face but can also occur on the back, shoulders, neck and chest. Although largely a problem in adolescence, it affects adults too. Mainly during adolescence, although it can happen any time, hormones increase the production of a waxy substance used to keep the skin moist. This substance clogs hair follicles and then bacteria can grow in these clogged pores.
Because the causes of acne are not widely understood several myths surrounding acne have occurred. One of these myths is that a poor diet or stress can cause acne. These do not cause acne but can aggravate it. Another myth is that poor hygiene causes acne. Because acne is not caused by dirt, scrubbing your face several times a day will not cure acne or keep it from occurring in the first place. Dermatologists recommend washing your face no more than twice a day with a mild cleanser. Yet another myth is that sun exposure will help acne. While getting a tan will appear to improve the appearance of acne because the darkness of your skin makes acne redness seem less noticeable, sun exposure increases the exfoliation of skin cells which can create more clogged pores. While acne cannot be cured, there are several treatments available.
One of these treatments is with salicylic acid which is closely related to aspirin. Similarly to aspirin, salicylic acid has an anti-inflammatory property. It also includes an antibacterial ingredient which helps to kill bacteria that contribute to acne. Because of its oil solubility, it can penetrate the clog and help break it up. Another treatment is with benzoyl peroxide. The bacteria causing acne breakouts cannot live in an oxygen-rich environment. While there is no cure for acne, the good news is that most acne outbreaks can be treated without a trip to the dermatologist.
